OILS WHICH ONES TO AVOID, WHICH ONES TO USE, AND WHY IT MATTERS

You've seen me mention often that all of the products I make are free of ''industrial seed oils" .. have you ever wondered why that actually matters ? Let me start by saying.. the truth is most things in scant amounts aren't a huge problem however this doesn't mean we should be consuming it regularly or daily and the truth is WE DO without even realizing it and that is actually a problem when it comes to our well being. These oils are the types of ingredients we really should avoid whenever it's possible. It's easier said than done though , once you start paying attention you will see that so many of our everyday foods contain these unhealthy oils. This is why I'm such a huge advocate for reading INGREDIENT labels and placing that at a much higher importance than the nutrition label.

Lets get into it !

INDUSTRIAL SEED and VEGETABLE OILS

Industrial seed and vegetable oils are derived from things like corn, soybeans, sunflower, safflower, and cotton. The reason they are called industrial seed oils is because they are historically used in a wide array of products including cosmetics and biodiesel fuel (mmmm sounds delicious) … they are also explored for things like lubricating machines and making printer ink, really they are quite valuable in so many ways EXCEPT FOR EATING ! Nowadays these oils are literally found in EVERYTHING we eat from a package or a bottle. Some examples include … salad dressings, chips, trail mix, dried fruit, granola, cookies, crackers, cakes, breads, cereals, sauces, condiments, yogurts, and many vegan alternative foods. We recognize many of these oils as HEART HEA ah-hem sorry I had something in my throat .. HEART HEALTHY. This claim couldn’t be any further from the truth. You see there are a few problems with these types of oils. The first issue being it’s highly unstable ratio of omegas. Optimally, we should be eating a pretty balanced ratio of omega3 fatty acids to omega 6… a balance of 1:1 actually! The thing about these industrial oils is that they are abnormally high in omega 6 fatty acids at ratios even as high as 25:1. This unstable nature makes it an oil that if highly prone to oxidation both in cooking and when they enter our bodies…. This is hugely linked to many numerous diseases because it causes inflammation. INFLAMMATION is a major contributor to diseases such as diabetes, obesity, asthma , cardiovascular disease, gut problems, insulin resistance and even some types of cancer… so it should be taken seriously ! Another reason why it is wise to stay away from these types of oils is simply because of how it’s made. Here is some food for thought… lets take corn … does corn contain a lot of fat ? NO … so how do you think oil is made out of it ? WELL it’s not by juicing it I’ll tell you that. The process of creating these oils involves an immense amount of refining, processing, and toxic chemicals like bleach and hexane to become the finished product …. all bottled up and sold to you to cook with. KIND OF F*CKED UP IF YOU ASK ME.

SO …. Why is this used in basically every product ?

THE ANSWER IS QUITE SIMPLE … MONEY….DUH.

These ingredients are cheap, accessible, and create a use for things that would otherwise be wasted. These oils became popular just around the time the industry began telling the world to beware of "saturated fats’’ … also around the time health in our society had started to decline... coincidence ? Come on now.

Here is a list of oils to avoid ! Canola oil, soybean oil , vegetable oil, palm oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, grapeseed oil, margarine, shortening, vegan butters, most peanut oils. (don't buy these and try to look for it in ingredient labels of the packaged foods you buy)

NOW ONTO THE GOOD !
